Folks driving near Walmart in La Grange Thursday afternoon may have seen a State Trooper’s patrol unit on a tow truck at the scene of a wreck. The trooper was not involved in the crash, though.

According to La Grange Police Sgt. Mitchell Maxwell, the trooper’s vehicle had broken down at a different location, and Paul’s Towing sent a wrecker to pick it up. The wrecker was transporting the trooper’s patrol unit back to La Grange when a wreck occurred at the intersection of State Hwy. 71 Business and FM 609 near Walmart.

Working double-duty, the wrecker stopped and used its wheel life to tow one of the damaged cars from the scene.

Maxwell said the crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 when a white Nissan Altima went straight in the turning lane instead of turning onto FM 609. Maxwell said the Altima was heading east on Business 71 in the right-turn-only lane with its blinker activated as if it was turning right. A Jeep Liberty was facing west on Business 71 in the turning lane attempting to turn left onto FM 609.

Maxwell said the driver of the Liberty thought the Nissan was turning onto FM 609. Instead, the Nissan continued east. The two vehicles collided in the intersection. Maxwell said the driver of the Nissan was at fault. No one was injured, but both vehicles had to be towed from the scene, with the Nissan getting a piggyback ride behind the State Trooper’s vehicle.
