About three acres of pasture burned near Swiss Alp on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department received a call reporting the grass on Ohnheiser Kaase Rd. around 11:30 a.m. They responded with two grass trucks and a tanker. Upon arrival, they found a field of tall grass on fire. Someone on the property was mowing part of the pasture with a riding lawn mower. The mower caught on fire in the thick grass and started the pasture on fire. Firefighters on the two grass trucks circled the burning field and quickly put out the fire. There were no injuries or major damage other than the mower, which was destroyed in the fire. The fire rekindled that afternoon, and firefighters returned around 1:30 p.m. to put out the remnants.

Schulenburg firefighters had a pretty busy beginning of the week. They assisted Flatonia Fire and Rescue all afternoon on Monday with the big structure fire in downtown Flatonia. Then on Tuesday, they assisted Weimar VFD with a grass fire on Interstate 10 near the 669 mile marker east of Schulenburg. On Wednesday, they fought another grass fire on Interstate 10 and a vehicle fire at The Texan Convenience Store.
