Thanksgiving Eve Accident Spills the Beans Along I-10
40,000 Pounds of Green Beans Ruined
The driver of an 18-wheeler escaped injury after his rig went off Interstate 10 and into Foster Creek just west of Schulenburg last Wednesday, Nov. 22. The cargo, however - 40,000 lbs. of green beans did not survive.
Schulenburg Fire Chief Darren Guentert said his department got the call around 1:49 a.m. The driver was out of the truck when the fire department got there, Guentert said. Firefighters directed traffic until the Texas Department of Transportation arrived and took over the clean-up operation, which lasted until well after daybreak. Texas Department of Transportation investigated the crash.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and Fayette County EMS also assisted at the scene.
The Thanksgiving Eve wreck ground traffic to a crawl on the Interstate during one of the busiest travel days of the year. Those 20 tons of green beans that missed their destination - enough to make a casserole the size of two tennis courts - may have spoiled a few Thanksgiving dinner plans as well. And that fact did not go unnoticed by local observers. Here are a few of the comments from the Sheriff’s Office Facebook post about the crash:
“Door to door green bean sales are gonna be up this weekend in Fayette County.” - Patrick P.
“Well, there goes the green bean casserole for 40,000 people.” - Kimberleighann W.
“Hey a new movie! ‘The Texas Green Bean Massacre’! The wrecker company is making good money on this one!” - Robert L.
“This is why you do your Thanksgiving grocery shopping early. Not the green beans!” - Staci U.
“NOT THE GREEN BEANS!!!!!! So many people without their green bean casserole tomorrow.” Melody M.
