The Texas Quilt Museum Announces Upcoming Exhibits and Local Events

The Texas Quilt Museum (TQM) is taking advantage of the natural Zen of its locale to offer some new programs that enrich the body, mind, and spirit, including:

• Sound Bath Sundays Sundays at 5 p.m. Envelop yourself in serene surroundings and let the healing sound of music wash over you! Waves of soothing, echoing sound from traditional wind and percussion instruments, also known as a “sound bath,” may help with stress, fatigue, depression, and illness. Dress comfortably, bring a yoga mat if you have one. Led by Doady Rogers ($10 for a onehour session / special events may dictate other fees)

• Beginner/Light Yoga Classes - Tuesdays and Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. Get ready for a wonderful day with gentle exercise in a beautiful and healing space! Dress comfortably, bring a yoga mat if you have one. Led by Jenny Janda or Doady Rogers ($10 for a one-hour class/special events may dictate other fees)

• Beginner Group Meditation - Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m., join leader, Connie Shortes and friends for group meditation! The Zen-like surroundings of TQM lend itself to a naturally peaceful environment. Learn techniques to help quiet your mind and relax in this hectic world. (Free, no mat required; as most sit in a chair)

• New Summer Exhibit - May 2 through Aug. 31, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Winners and Western Quilts, Excellence in Fiber Exhibit from Fiber Art Now Magazine, and amazing Rodeo Art from our area student artists. Make plans to visit often, as we have a brand-new exhibit every four months. They have also been working with other area non-profits, to implement a variety of children and family programs to create another venue for family entertainment.

• Saturday, May 4 from 10:30 a.m. to noon - “Plant-a-Memory” Family Garden Activity - Kids will learn about the art of gardening through an interactive, hands-on presentation. They will create their own miniature terrarium garden to bring home. ($10 per child)

• Saturday, May 10 - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., TQM will have a model train in Gallery I, to celebrate National Train Day with the M-K-T Depot Museum. Then be sure to visit the Depot to see many other model trains and memorabilia.

• The Butterfly Jubilee Saturday, June 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., make a wish and release a live butterfly in TQM’s Grandmother’s Flower Garden at The Butterfly Jubilee. Also enjoy many other family activities including the “Airing of the Quilts”, live music, food, “Plant-a-Memory” gardening activity, “My Favorite Quilt” family activity, The Great Story Fairy, have fun at the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter’s Adopt-a-Pet “Snuggle Station”, explore the Butterfly Garden Safari Game, ride the M-K-T “Butterfly Express” children’s train, M-K-T Depot Tours, Shopping Fun and more. This fundraising event benefits the children’s programs at the Texas Quilt Museum and is in collaboration with the M-K-T Depot Museum, the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter, the La Grange Garden Club, the Colorado Valley Quilt Guild, La Grange Mainstreet and Visitors Bureau, and Texas Commission on the Arts.

• Kids Needle Felting Embroidery Camp, June 24-28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with Chris Kosler, this collaborative effort is with ARTS for Rural Texas. Includes all supplies and instruction for a week-long class. Offering a fun and exciting way to embroider and other fun adventures. To register, swing by TQM or go online at Arts-ForRuralTexas.org.

• Kids Quilt Camp, June 17-21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with Jeanette Brown, this collaborative effort is with ARTS for Rural Texas. Includes all supplies and instruction for a week-long class. Offering a fun and exciting way to learn the legacy of quilting and other fun adventures. To register, swing by TQM or go online at www.ArtsForRuralTexas.org.

• Saturday, June Saturday, June 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. or Sunday Matinée, June 16 from 2-3:30 p.m. - “A Thimble of Hope” - Join for fun and folklore in this onewoman show featuring Mary Margaret Mann. See how the art, emotion and the power of quilting is woven into the fabric of American history. This fundraising effort collaborates with ARTS for Rural Texas. You have two shows to choose from. Seating is limited, get your tickets today. ($20 Adults, 12 and under free)

• Coming in July - Puppet-Making Workshop! Join for a fun time with fabric and stories, too. This workshop will teach kids about making puppets, shadow puppets and creating stories. It’s fun for all ages. (Visit www.TexasQuilt-Museum.org for date and time, $5 per child)

• Saturday, July 27 and Saturday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. - “My Favorite Quilt” Family Activity - Gather ‘round for some quilting fun. Kids and adults will learn about the art of quilting, while exploring your favorite things. This hands-on activity is great for all ages and you will create your own miniature keepsake quilt to bring home. (free, reserve your space, today)

• Now Open, The Kids Zone - Children’s Discovery Exhibit, features fun activities, including puzzles, a “hands-on” sewing clinic, Oh, Say Can You Sew, an “I Spy” Family Scavenger Hunt and sew much more!

• The Flower Garden Safari, adjacent to the museum, our Grandmother’s Flower Garden will be in full bloom with flowers and activities for kids of all ages. Get your Flower Garden Safari Kit at the front desk for just $10 per child.
