Taste of the Towns Competition Held
Schulenburg vs. Weimar All for A Good Cause
What’s a friendly rivalry between towns? On Sunday, June 5, in Schulenburg at Wolters Park many found out at the first annual Taste of Towns held by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Champion Valley.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Champion Valley represent Weimar, Schulenburg, and Columbus. For years, they have held a fundraiser called Taste of Columbus where local businesses and groups from Columbus and the surrounding areas would compete against each other to see who could cook the best appetizer or dessert. Anyone who paid for entry into the event got to try each team’s entry and vote for their favorite one.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Champion Valley Executive Director Abigail Torres Janak said, “This year, we decided to play off the small-town rivalry between Schulenburg and Weimar and have a Taste of the Towns. It had the same concept but would be held in Schulenburg and focus more on businesses and groups from Weimar and Schulenburg.”
The following teams competed:
Schulenburg Teams: Schulenburg Police Dept., Schulenburg Jr. High, Schulenburg Elementary, Blinn College Schulenburg, Cooking with P.A.T. and Jack & Mary’s.
Weimar Teams: Weimar Police Dept., Cavender’s Auto Country, Weimar Encore Lions Club, Ken Kram State Farm Ins., Hubbard Funeral Home, Hill Bank & Trust Co., Weimar Rotary Club and Weimar ISD.
Schulenburg’s Chief of Police Troy Brenek said the whole department had fun and was proud to participate and have even already started preparing for next year. “Participating in this event exemplifies how our department is committed to serving the community. Partnering with the Boys and Girls Club to help start a new event is satisfying, especially when it is an opportunity to promote the youth,” said Brenek. The department received a well-deserved win of First Place Appetizer with their “Shotgun Shells,” which were manicotti shells stuffed with sausage and cheese and wrapped with bacon and smoked.
