A Snapshot of LGISD Busses
Senate Bill 546 which was passed during the 89th Texas Legislature, strengthens standards for school buses transporting students. According to this bill, districts must present a report that includes the number of buses in the fleet, the number with 3-point seat belts, the number with 2-point seat belts, and the number with no seat belts. The bill also requires the district to determine the estimated cost to equip all buses with the 3-point seat belts.
Here are those statistics as presented at the February LGISD school board meeting: Total buses in fleet - 24 Number with 3-point seat belts - 11 Number with 2-point seat belts - 3 Number with no seat belts - 10 The estimated cost to equip all buses with a 3-point seat belt: $215,508.31 for 7 International buses – this excludes the 6 Bluebird buses as they cannot be retrofitted and are some of the oldest buses in the fleet. This cost is approximately $30,000 per bus. The district has been purchasing new school buses with 3-point seat belts since 2019 and will continue to budget for the purchase of all future new buses with 3-point seat belts. The district will not be retrofitting the aging bus fleet with 3-point seat belts as those 13 buses will soon be retired.
