Snake Bite Sends One To Austin Trauma Center

A person showed up at the EMS station in La Grange on Sunday afternoon with an apparent snake bite.

Fayette County EMS Director Josh Vandever said the patient appeared to have been bitten in the hand.

“It sounds like the patient was working around a brush pile when it occurred,” Vandever said.

Medics at the station managed the patient’s pain with IV medication and then transported the patient to a trauma center in Austin.

“We would like to remind residents that this is the time of year to be extremely vigilant for snakes, especially copperheads, water moccasins, rattlesnakes and coral snakes,” Vandever said.

“If bitten, try to get a picture or solid identification of the snake if it can be done safely and seek emergency care immediately,” he added. “Trying to remain calm and keeping the snake bite below the level of the heart is beneficial. Also, removing any rings or tight clothing near the site of the bite can be helpful as well.”
