Shooting Now a Homicide Case After Victim Dies
The case involving the Flatonia Postmaster who allegedly shot a man in Lavaca County on March 5 is now a homicide.
The Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office told the Record this week that the victim has died from his injuries. Chief Deputy J.R. Peters of the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office would not release the name of the victim.
However, multiple other sources have identified the deceased as 47-year-old Jason Pilat of Shiner. Shiner Funeral Home released an obituary for Pilat this week. He died on March 17, according to the obituary.
The suspect, 44-yearold Michael Joseph McKim of Flatonia, was arrested at the scene of the shooting on March 5.
According to initial reports, McKim shot the victim after finding his wife at the victim’s home. At the time, McKim was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with bail set at $100,000.
McKim posted bond and was released the next day. He remains out on bail as of Thursday morning, March 23.
Peters told the Record this week that the Texas Rangers are handling the investigation and were working to file additional charges against Mc-Kim.
