Seniors Make Cookies, Cakes for First Responders
Senior Connections started off last Monday with a Lunch & Learn speaker from Garden-Walk of LSW that provides some reduced cost senior housing in La Grange, Weimar, and Schulenburg.
Tuesday was Baking Group’s day. Irene Janda, who is 91-years-old, made three loaves of freshly made white bread. Kathy Carpenter, who is the volunteer leader, made some sweet bread loaves as well, and Kitra Ruiz made some vegan cookies. Kathy performs her magic and gets the boxes all packed up with goodness, and Cindy Villarreal delivered them to the first responders in the area.
This month’s boxes went to the new EMS Station in Schulenburg, to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Deptartment and to Pct. 4 Fayette County Commissioner Drew Brossmann’s team. Each of these groups of working citizens put themselves out for all the other citizens in town, keeping them safe and sound, when trouble abounds. Senior Connections wants them to know that they “see their work” and appreciate their dedication to their jobs.
Drew Brossmann brought his team in to pick up their box of treats. He was adamant when he said he would bring them in, because, in his words, “these men don’t get to hear the compliments we get on the work they do, nor do they get to be face-to-face with the actual people that are thanking them. These men help me to look good, but they are the ones doing the work, day in and day out,” so this is why he brought them with him to pick up their box of baked treats.
Members applauded team Pct. 4 and told them that they admire the work they do, especially with all this oppressive heat. Good job Drew Brossmann, your pride in your team showed through, and we were impressed with your leadership. Together, we are all stronger.
Sponsorships continue to roll in for the New Year’s Heritage Ball. Have you gotten your table yet? The fund raising is a great opportunity for the public to contribute and help meet specific needs of Senior Connections. These campaigns, grants, and events are the attempt to meet budget goals and continue the level of service we are accustomed to. We have been so fortunate that our community recognizes the need for a senior services program in town. The numbers coming through the door are also indicative of this need, and our mission is simple: to enhance the quality of life for the senior citizens we serve. We welcome your support and would love to add your company name to our donor board to this event.
On Thursday, Sept. 14, we loaded up the Schuber Transportation Van and went to Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham. There was a group of 13 members who enjoyed each other’s company, a quick tour of the Creamery, a sample of new flavors of ice cream, and then we headed west on Hwy. 290 to the Lone Star Southern Grill.
