Seniors Hear From League of Women Voter’s Organizer
Senior Connections asks for your support as we are planning to have a table at the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce Arts & Crafts Sale at the KC Hall in mid-November. The table will be adorned with homemade cakes, cookies, and various other local homemade specialties. The senior members love to provide their best goodies and even had a great idea.
At this time, Senior Connections is in search of a business or company that would like to be a sponsor for the Thanksgiving luncheon for the senior members who attend. If you would like to get involved with Senior Connections, call (979) 7433227.
This past week, members were blessed to host Janis Richardson, who represents the League of Women Voter’s of South Central Texas. She was so gracious and joined for lunch, then gave an awesome presentation on the upcoming election process. Her informative talk let members know that the organization formed in 1919 and a bill passed in 1920 allowing women to vote.
Janis comes from Tennessee, where she was volunteering for the League of Women Voters. When she moved to Texas, there was no league here so she started one. They now have a reach of five area counties in the surrounding area. Their mission is to empower the voters and educate them on how to vote. She provided everyone with a Voter’s Guide that is Non-Partisan and each candidate running for office provided a picture and a short bio of themselves.
She also provided our members with key dates such as the last days to register, the first day to vote early, the last day to vote early-Nov. 4, the last day to apply for a vote by mail ballot, the vote by mail deadline and the general election day, which is Nov. 8. All members were appreciative of the information she provided and for the Voters Guide.
