Senior Connections Expands Programs, Plans Renovation of Former Gallip Building
Senior Connections, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a vibrant community for seniors aged 55 and up, has become the place to be for active seniors in Fayette, Colorado, and Lavaca counties.
With locations in Schulenburg at 1111 Bohlmann Ave., Weimar at the First United Methodist Church, 301 W. Saint Charles St., and Flatonia at the Flatonia Methodist Church, 403 E. North Main St., the organization invites older adults to join in the fun and camaraderie. You will find our family will soon become yours.
Open from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Senior Connections sees many eager participants arriving as early as 8:30 a.m. Members can enjoy engaging games such as dominoes, sequence, and various card games while sipping on hot coffee served by our dedicated volunteers. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, setting the perfect stage for social interaction.
At 11 a.m. the focus shifts to lunch, where participants are encouraged to arrive early to secure a seat. Members gather to hear announcements, share prayer concerns, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and bless the food before indulging in delicious, healthy, homecooked meals. Notably, lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and due to growing attendance, members now line up as early as 11:20 a.m. on Wednesdays, so get here by 10:50.
In a significant development, Senior Connections has recently purchased the old Galipp’s supermarket in downtown Schulenburg, which will undergo major renovations. As part of our capital campaign, donations are being accepted at this link https://givebutter. com/RRVED or you can go to www.srconnections.org.
Bob Stanzel, a key figure in the renovation project, shared an update: “We have about 90% of the internal layout completed and are working on program-related details to ensure the space functions efficiently for our daily operations. Our team is also developing renderings of the interior to aid in marketing efforts, focusing on drainage, safe access, and demolition plans to prepare for construction. Each step brings us closer to a building that will support our programs and our growing membership.”
Members can look forward to Amanda Kridel’s famous meatloaf served with buttered potatoes and house salad on March 23 in Schulenburg. Following lunch, Schulenberg Rehab and Shon Horan will lead a session on exercises to boost bone density and lymph drainage, crucial topics for many members. The day will culminate in a bingo game hosted by Amedisys Hospice Care, introducing a new bingo caller to the team of dedicated bingo callers, for whom we are so thankful.
Baked ziti with garlic bread and salad will be on the menu, courtesy of our executive director, Amanda Kridel, on March 24 in Flatonia. Members are encouraged to bring desserts to share; currently, no one is signed up for today. Let Stephanie know if you can bring something. At noon, Heather, the owner of the historic Ollie Hotel, will present an engaging program about the hotel’s history, followed by a bingo game organized by Flatonia Health Center.
The day will feature grilled chicken provided by Connie Koopmann of Koopmann Catering, served with macaroni and cheese and salad on March 25 in Schulenburg. Wednesday bingo will bring excitement as Deannie Crim from Schulenberg Family Fitness leads the games with her infectious energy.
At 1206 S. Lyons Ave., the month-long workshops in art journaling led by Jaime Janda and in printmaking with Claire Lewis will conclude on Artful Friday, March 27 with a creative collage session. Upcoming April classes will include floral arranging and a class on a collection of painting techniques; both classes are already full, showing the community’s enthusiasm for these enriching programs. You can visit the website to see the schedule of upcoming classes. You can call the center to register.
On April 12, members will visit the St. Mary’s Church in Ellinger for a tour and hear the history of the church and then will enjoy lunch at Orsak’s and complete the day with music at the Fayettville Community Center. The Shiner Hobo Band will be playing. You can meet up with us at any of these locations.
On May 3, the group will enjoy a lunch together at a location to be decided and then on to see the play Curious Savage, the comedy play performed by the Fayette Community Theater. There is limited tickets for this adventure so get your name on the list.
