Second Chance Funds New Orthopedic Power Instruments for St. Mark’s Medical Center

The Second Chance Emporium awarded St. Mark’s Medical Center (SMMC) $31,543 to purchase a Stryker TPX small bone surgical power set, enhancing abilities to provide toe, foot and ankle surgeries.

The surgical instrumentation set consists of a power driver with multiple saw/drill attachments. Examples of the procedures where this instrumentation is used include: bunionectomy, hammertoe, total ankle arthroplasty, and toe/foot amputation.

“We’re so fortunate to have the ongoing support of the Second Chance Emporium,” said SMMC President and CEO Mark Kimball. “Their recognition of our needs and ability to help fund them significantly helps our not-for-profit, community hospital continue to offer exceptional care to our patients.”

“These upgraded power instruments are more ergonomically designed and provide increased agility for small bone procedures,” said Dr. Jonathan Blake, SMMC orthopedic surgeon. “Adding these instruments helps our team to operate at a higher level of efficiency, and we thank the Second Chance Emporium for their support.”

The Second Chance Emporium resale store is operated by a coalition of seven local churches representing various denominations, and is predominantly staffed by unpaid volunteers from the community. Donations of gently used household goods, clothing and furniture are sold at low prices to benefit buyers as well as local charities that apply to the store’s board of directors for funding. The shop is located at 841 S. Reynolds St., in La Grange; donations are accepted Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Shoppers are welcome Friday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
