A rent house in Schulenburg suffered major damage in a fire on Monday, July 17.

Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department got the call just after 5 p.m. reporting a structure fire at 101 Schulz Avenue, located near the Schulenburg City Cemetery. Schulenburg Fire Chief Jeff Proske said the fire started in a shed that was attached to a wood-frame home.

The occupant, Chad Riche, was home at the time. Proske said Riche got out of the home unharmed along with his pets. He was also able to get his vehicle away from the fire, Proske said.

“We got there with our quick response trucks for an initial attack,” Proske said. “And those trucks did a pretty good job of getting water on the fire, giving us time to get a pumper hooked to a hydrant.”

The fire quickly spread, however, from the shed to the home. Proske said the fire gutted about two-thirds of the house. Proske said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

Schulenburg VFD responded with 26 firefighters and five fire trucks along with a command vehicle. They left the scene shortly before 7 p.m. after putting out the fire.
