Retired Teachers Meet, Hear From League of Women Voters of South Central Texas
Members of the Fayette County Retired Teachers’ Association met on Monday, Jan. 8, with 18 in attendance. The fellowship time was hosted by Linda Oltmann and Joan Miertschin.
The business meeting included the treasurer’s report, information from Jaci Elliott from the League of Women Voters of South Central Texas, who spoke on “Celebrating Women: Student Writing Showcase.” This project aims to honor women who have made a real difference in their local communities. The League plans to award seven cash prizes of $300 each to high school students in a writing/ speaking competition. Students are invited to create an original essay, poem, or spoken word piece. Online submissions may be submitted Jan. 1-31. The seven winning students will be invited to read or perform their pieces at the League’s annual “Women Making History” event on March 10, at Schulenburg’s Senglemann Hall. For further information, the full guidelines may be found at https:// www.lwvsouthcentraltx.org/ Nominations for FCRTA officers are needed at this time; goodie baskets with snack items for active Fayette County teachers/staff (all schools) were assembled, and those taking the baskets were reminded to return them at the March meeting. The retention member drawing was won by Marian Tajchman, and the Book Project Raffle prize (donated by Esther Hartman) was also won by Marian Tajchman.
