Retired Teachers Hear Cyber Scam Warning During February Meeting

The Fayette County Retired Teachers Association met Monday, Feb. 9 at the New Life Methodist Church in La Grange. Guest speaker was Sergeant Angela Lala of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, speaking about “phishing” and cybercrime scams.

Sergeant Lala presented many current examples of attempted fraud and reminded attendees that Americans lost over $12.5 billion dollars to fraud in 2024. She provided tips and methods to be cautious when dealing with financial requests on-line.

The business portion of the meeting included the treasurer’s report, and the naming of new officers for the 2026-2028 term. New officers are Lisa Slinkard, First Vice President, and Marian Tajchman, Second Vice President. Peggy Halamicek, Theresa Wagner and Chris Morrison were named as representatives to the Virtual House of Delegates.

Refreshments were provided by Kathy Migl, Jeanne Wetjen, and Debbie Morril. Joan Miertchinn won the Book Raffle Prize, and Peggy Halamicek won the member retention drawing. The next meeting will be March 9, with Kenny Couch, Executive Director of Fayette County Habitat for Humanity speaking.
