Retired FBI Special Agent Returns to RT Family Library

The Round Top Family Library FYI presents David Smith on Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m., back by popular demand.

After eight years as an Airborne Ranger in the US Army, David spent a career as an FBI Special Agent investigating various violations of federal law, including domestic terrorism. His last major case was the FBI’s Top-10 fugitive Eric Robert Rudolph for a bombing and murder in Burmingham, Alabama, in January of 1998. Rudolph was finally caught after five years of hiding in the North Carolina mountains.

David will speak of the twists and turns of the investigation, apprehension and successful prosecution of Rudolph, who also bombed the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Rudloph is currently serving a life without parole sentence in a Federal Penitentiary in Colorado. Question and Answer session to follow. This event is free and open to the public.

The next Family Game Day is Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. All are welcome. Off to the Races!

Gardenia E. Janssen’s annual fundraiser – “Off to the Races!” will be held Saturday, May 4. This Derby Day Brunch inspired by Due Market Hill will be full of live music, a live and silent auction, hat contest, winning horse raffle, Derby Day cocktails, Whiskey Wall, golden ticket jewelry raffle and more. Round Top Chamber Social 

The next Monthly Chamber Social is planned for Thursday, May 9 from 5-7 p.m. Location will be shared soon.

Winedale 

The next Winedale Online Talk: “All Trails Led to Houston” will be Tuesday, May 14. Photographer and author Ray Viator will talk about the riders, horses, wagons, and western traditions celebrated each day of the trail rides that lead to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Festival Hill 

Saturday, May 11, from 9:30-11 a.m., Festival Hill is looking for volunteers to help clean up the Festival Hill grounds. Call (979) 249-3129 for more information.

RT-C ISD The Texas A&M mobile clinic will be on site Wednesday, May 8 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. to provide immunizations and sports physicals. To make an appointment, please call the Texas A&M appointment line at (979) 436-0587.

Students have a holiday on Monday, May 13. The last day of school is May 23, and there will be an early release. Graduation is scheduled for May 24.

Round Top Rifle Hall 

The Round Top Rifle Hall’s Monday Night Hamburger Socials take place the first, second, and third Mondays of each month, the Hall is open from 5:30-8 p.m. for hamburgers, “The Rooster,” hotdogs, or chilidogs, along with fries or onion rings. All proceeds benefit the continued improvement of the Round Top Rifle Association.

Hermann Sons 

Hermann Sons Life, Lodge 151 Round Top, had their monthly meeting on Thursday April 25 at the American Legion Hall. Linda Mattocks, President, called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance. Ida Blackwell, age 10 and a member since birth, sang the Star Spangled Banner and the Gilligan’s Island theme song.

Discussion for monetary support of community events continued. The new members are Madeline Mays, Paxon Porter and Hadley Harper. Jeanette Schoenst will send a welcome letter to the new transfers, Slade, Skylar and Jamie Schroeder.

The lodge’s annual picnic is on Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. There were no scholarship applications this year. Happy Birthday was sung to Myrt Meinkowsky, Bob Porter, and Ray Ullrich for April Birthdays, and Linda Mattock and Ida Blackwell for March birthdays. There was no meeting in March because of the antique sales at the hall.

Attendance prizes were won by Ray Ullrich, Margie Stardig, Dwight Nittsche, Mary Rauch and Leonard Meinkowsky. Refreshments, lunch and fellowship followed. Next meeting will be May 23.

Church News 

St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby and Bethlehem Lutheran Church will have a joint worship Sunday, May 5 at 10 a.m. at the Round Top Rifle Hall. There will be a polka service followed by the annual BLC Chicken Fry. Get your meal tickets now.

Birthdays 

Happy birthday to Matthew Eckermann on May 3, Lanette Williams, Lauriano Pineda, Jr., Mallorie Hohlt-5, Dusti Robinson and Ricky Weyand-6, Emily Levien and Kade Sanders-7, and Brittany Jacob-8.
