School Board Vote Recount Complete
April 17-20, 1973
Rudolph Voss was returned to the La Grange School Board by a final vote in his favor of 415 to 410 for challenger Joe G. Bargas after a recount of Place 7 votes. Recount committee members Atlan M. Citzler, Raymond W. Schulz and Vastine Schultz each confirmed they had individually counted the ballots exactly as voted. Following that official notice, Voss was named chairman of the board and Elmo Minzenmeyer, vice chairman, each by a vote of 4 to 3. It was the first time in recent years that more than one trustee had been nominated for a board post or elected by other than unanimous vote.
The new grand jury for the 155th District Court of Fayette County brought in six felony indictments and passed one matter over to the next grand jury in a one-day session in La Grange. Five defendants were either in custody or free on bond for burglary with intent to commit theft, while another was indicted for driving while intoxicated. A defendant indicted on a worthless check charge had not yet been arrested.
Skin testing for tuberculosis was to take place at five Fayette County locations in cooperation with the Texas Department of Health. The testing locations were: county agricultural building in La Grange; county building in Schulenburg; Flatonia City Hall; Swiss Alp Farm Bureau; and Carmine Fire Station. The tests, available at no charge, were replacing those formerly conducted with the mobile xray unit. The results were to be available on Thurs., April 26 at the same locations. Physicians emphasized that a positive reaction did not necessarily mean the individual had tuberculosis.
The Methodist Youth Group was again sponsoring an Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. on Monument Hill on Sun., April 28. In case of inclement weather, the service was to be held in the Travis Street United Methodist Church in La Grange. Another Easter sunrise worship service was planned for 6:30 a.m. under the massive live oak trees at the United Evangelical Lutheran Church at Swiss Alp. The St. Paul Lutheran Church choir was presenting an Easter Cantata on Easter Sunday at 8 o’clock.
La Grange Chamber of Commerce President J.C. Warhol reported that membership stood at 183.
La Grange High School came in for laurels in the Junior Historian Essay Writing Contest by the University of Texas in Austin. La Grange was cited as the outstanding first-year chapter on the junior high school level.
La Grange placed second in the seventh grade division and fourth in the eighth grade department in the annual District 12-3Ajunior high track and field meet. Placings for seventh grade students were: shot, Douglas Richter, first; long jump, Richter, third; discus, Ricky Dippel, second; pole vault, Michael Miller, first; 440-yard relay, Carl Scott, Ray Griffin, Alfredie Scott and Richter, second; 440-yard run, Alfredie Scott, first; 100-yard dash, Richter, first, and Miller, third; 880-yard run, Marty Norsworthy, third; and 880-yard relay, same team as 440-yard relay, second. Eighth grade results included: high jump, Stephen Ashley, third; pole vault, Billy Dunk, third; 440-yard relay, Chester Washington, Thomas Matocha, Louis Glenn and Larry Scott, third; 100-yard low hurdles, Scott, second; and 880yard relay, same team as 440yard relay, third.
Funeral services were held for: Joe Barton, 75, of Dubina; Mrs. Rosie Creppon, 82, of La Grange; Walter G. Goehring, 72, of Walhalla; and Mrs. Lina Viewig, 88, of La Grange.
David Reue and Mike Mabry were co-chairing the La Grange area Texas A&M Muster on Sat., April 21 at Roitsch’s Camp.
Members of Fayette Memorial Post No. 5254, Veterans of Foreign Wars, elected Paul Kleiber as post commander. The following slate of officers was also being installed in May: Edwin Kulhanek, senior vice commander; Calvin Kuehn, junior vice commander; Werner von Minden, quartermaster; Edmond Harbers, chaplain; Theodore Harbers, surgeon; Loydie Tiedt, post advocate; and James Scholtz, three-year trustee.
Enthusiasm was building for the Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP) Walk for the Hungry. The walk, an estimated 10 miles in length, was to start at the city park at Hwy. 77 and Eblin St., cross the highway, meander uptown to circle the Square, proceed west along Hwy. 71, move uphill through FrischAuf! to the radio station and then on to Monument Hill State Park. Participants were encouraged to seek sponsors and the money raised was to be sent overseas to feed hungry children.
Audrey Ann Janda of La Grange was on the dean’s honor list for the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas. Russell Allen Friemel, a business school student at the University of Texas, was also named to the fall semester honor roll.
