A 17-year-old La Grange area youth lost his life by drowning in an abandoned gravel pit on the family farm west of town on Sunday afternoon. Michael Frank Vecera, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred F. Vecera, was in a boat with his younger brother when he dived into the water but failed to surface. La Grange firemen recovered his body about an hour later.

One of the latest additions to the 45th annual Fayette County Fair list of performers was the High Flying Obandos, a South American troupe of three men and two young ladies, who were to perform 60 feet in the air twice daily during the four-day show. Also added to the entertainment lineup was Miss Tony, the firejumping horse, owned and trained by Lee and Lourine Rosenbranz of Hearne, Texas.

In other Fayette County Fairrelated news, city manager Atlan Citzler reported the new entrance off Hwy. 77 had been roughed in and would be completed before the fair. Horse stalls at the rear of the livestock building were almost finished and renovations were nearly complete to the former Farmer Brown building. Season tickets for the fair, which were on sale at both La Grange banks, were $2. Daily admission cost was $1 for adults and 50¢ for students, with youngsters under six admitted free.

On the first day of classes, enrollment in La Grange’s public schools stood at 1,316, plus 126 students attending Sacred Heart Catholic School. The city-wide total was 1,442 pupils.

Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Louise Stoever, 89, of La Grange; Louis M. Matocha, 76, of La Grange; Mrs. Cecelia (Lillie) Vasicek, 68, of Fayetteville and Industry; Arthur J. Guettler, 84, of La Grange; Mrs. Nella Wilson, 52, of La Grange; Clinton Bertsch, 45, a Fayette County native; and Mrs. Laura Forres, 77, a native of Fayetteville.

Three Fayetteville and Round Top-Carmine students were named to the Blinn College honor roll for the second summer term. They were: Calvin E. Coufal, Lonnie G. Hermann and Rebecca M.

Winchester’s baseball team annexed the Colorado Valley Amateur League championship with the following players: Daniel Gersch, Marcus Cook, Wayne Zoch, Leonard Niesner, Billy Krause, Bobby Miertschin, James Lehmann, M. Lehmann, Charles Koepke, Mike Dalchan, Randy Pietsch, Dennis Winkler, Bubba Smith, James Kipp and George Lafoose. The team’s manager was Stanley Fritsche, while Victor Zoch served as assistant manager.

Fayetteville resident Emil Schley Jr. received a Master of Science degree in agriculture education from Southwest Texas State University. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Schley Sr. of Fayetteville.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner John C. White announced that all uses of DDT would be banned in Texas after Thurs., Aug. 20. The ban was put into effect by White’s refusal to register DDT products for the prohibited uses. No pesticides would be sold in Texas unless they were registered by White. The Pesticide Advisory Committee recommended the action because farmers used relatively small amounts of DDT for crop production and suitable alternative insecticides were available. Then the only legal use of DDT was in prescription drugs, on stored sweet potatoes, and in health quarantine and disease control programs sponsored by the government.
