Legion, Auxiliary

On Tuesday, May 9 at noon, Dr. Rebecca Sharpless from TCU’s Department of History will present “Kolaches, Cornbread, and Texas Baking History.” E-mail tricia. blakistone@austin.utexas.edu for a link to this zoom talk.

The American Legion Post No. 102 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 102 will meet for their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 10 at 6 p.m. at the VFW Home located at Veterans Memorial Drive at the Fayette County Fair Grounds in La Grange. Members are encouraged to attend to discuss regular business matters. New potential members are invited to attend. A light meal will be served following the meeting.

Food Truck

The Central Texas Food Bank mobile food truck will be at St. John in Fayetteville on Wednesday, May 10 from 10 to 11 a.m. This is a walk up distribution with volunteers there to help. If possible, bring large bags or a box for food items.

Noon Lions Club

The La Grange Noon Lions Club meets on Thursdays at noon until 1 p.m. at Frisch Auf! Valley Country Club in La Grange. The guest speaker for Thursday, May 11 is Kelly Langley from Workforce Solutions for Rural Capital Area.

Book Sale

Friends of the Schulenburg Library are hosting their annual Book Sale at the Library on 310 Simpson St., Schulenburg, beginning Monday, May 15 to Tuesday, May 23 during regular library hours. Books are from a variety of sources including many donations of long loved collections by those in declutter mode. Whether you wish to buy or just browse, all are welcome. Prices start at fifty cents. Hardcovers from a dollar. Proceeds benefit the Library.

For the Record on Page A2 & A7 Relay For Life of La Grange will be having a meeting on Thursday, May 11, at La Grange City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 5:45 p.m. Anyone interested in having a team for this year’s Relay should attend. The organization would love to see more teams participate in this year’s Relay which is scheduled for late September 2023.

Sages & Saints Meeting

Sages and Saints will meet this month at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on Thursday, May 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Bring your favorite dish to share for a pot luck and dessert will be provided. Diana Wilson will educate all in attendance on the Fibonacci Sequence in art and nature.

Mary Martha Guild Bake Sale

The Mt. Calvary Mary Martha Guild will host its annual Mother’s Day Bake Sale in front of National Bank & Trust on the courthouse square on Friday, May 12 beginning at 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. or until sold out. Baked goods available will include cakes, pies, brownies, cookies, cupcakes and other home baked items. Free will donations. Funds raised will support various local outreach projects. Be sure to come early and surprise Mom with a treat.

LMS Community Projects Open House

Join La Grange Middle School for a come and go event at the La Grange Middle School Gym on Friday, May 12 from 8 to 9 a.m. to see all the amazing things La Grange Middle School 8th graders have accomplished in the community this year. Family Fun Game Day

Round Top Family Library will host a game day, free and open to the public, on May 13 from 2-5 p.m. at the Historic Rummel Haus. The library provides the board games and you provide the competitors. Bring your family and friends to 206 W. Mill Street in Round Top. A parent or guardian must be present. A light snack will be served.

Hot Dogs and Bake Sale

St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinger will have a hot dog and bake sale Saturday, May 13 serving from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The bake sale is a free will donation. Proceeds will benefit future ministries. For additional information, call or text (979) 966-3515.

St. James Barbecue and Bake Sale The St. James Episcopal Men’s Club will hold a barbecue and the Women will hold a bake sale Saturday, May 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out, at 156 N. Monroe St. across from H-E-B. A half chicken is $5 and a sausage links $7, drive through only. This barbecue is for the benefit of the Texas Ramp Project.

Annual Remembrance Program

The Bethlehem A.M.E. Church located at 2200 Bethlehem Church Rd. in La Grange will have their annual remembrance Saturday, May 13 beginning at 1:30 p.m. with guest speaker Rev. Leo Vaughns, Jr. from St. Mark Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth.

Swiss Alp-Ammannsville-Dubina Meeting The local Swiss Alp-Ammannsville-Dubina Farm Bureau will hold their meeting on May 16 at the Swiss Alp Farm Bureau hall. The social starts at 6 p.m. followed by a potluck supper. Scholarship recipients and their families are invited to attend. There will be a short business meeting after the supper. Members are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert.

Fundraiser for the Faison House

The Smith McMillan Chapter of the Texas Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is sponsoring a fundraiser for the Faison House in La Grange on Tuesday, May 16 from 4:30 to 6:15 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church parking lot (across from H-E-B in La Grange). The drive-thru features a chicken dinner with red potatoes, green beans, grilled, squash, roll, and cobbler for only $12. 50-Year Reunion of LHS Class of 1973 The La Grange High School Class of 1973 will gather for their 50-year reunion at the Holman parish hall on Saturday, June 3, beginning at 3 p.m. with class photo at 5:30 and barbecue pork meal at 6 p.m. BYOB. Old High Hill Cemetery Meeting

The Old High Hill Cemetery Association annual business meeting will be held on Sunday, May 21 at St. Paul’s Hall, 712 Summit St. in Schulenburg at 2 p.m. All members, family, and descendants of those buried in the cemetery are encouraged to attend and participate in the meeting.The Old High Hill Cemetery is located about three miles northwest of Schulenburg on FM 2672. The Old High Hill Cemetery Association, Inc. is recognized as a non-profit, tax exempt organization under IRS Code Section 501(c)(13), which makes contributions tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Funds are needed to maintain this historic perpetual care cemetery.
