On Tuesday, July 26 around 2 p.m., Father Steve Sauser, the priest for St. John and St. Mary’s, was heading to Fayetteville from St. Mary’s in Ellinger. As he drove over the hill at the intersection of N. Rusk and the railroad tracks, his SUV was hit by an oncoming train. “I was on the tracks and glanced both ways to see if there were any trains coming. I never heard a whistle until I was in the middle of the tracks. When I heard it, I immediately drove over the rest of the tracks but the train hit the back seat on the drivers side and the very back of my SUV,” explained Father Sauser. “The next thing I remember, I got out of the car and caught my breath. The train stopped down the tracks where someone from the sheriff’s department came and spoke to the conductor. The SUV is totaled. I’m just bruised pretty badly. Everyone that lived around there was very helpful. The community was incrediblysupportive.”On a separate note, Father Sauser would like to remind everyone that a portion of the proceeds from their upcoming feast and bazaar are being donated to Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
