Pioneer Unit of the Herb Society Holds ‘Thymely’ Talk

January found the Pioneer Unit of the Herb Society of America meeting at the Brenham Presbyterian Church for a presentation by the Pioneer Unit Horticulture Study Group, led by Madeline Johnson, on the results of their year-long study of thyme. “A Thymely Talk” provided information about the growth of eight varieties of thyme during 2022, a challenging year for many plants.

Members learned which thymes grew best during the heat and drought, comparing plants in containers and plants in the ground. Members were also treated to information about the history of thyme cultivation, folklore involving thyme, use of thyme in cooking and crafting, and the health benefits of using thyme. After the presentation and a brief meeting, guests enjoyed a potluck lunch featuring foods for health.

In February, the Pioneer Unit meeting will again be held at Brenham Presbyterian Church, 900 South Jackson St, Brenham, starting at 9:30 a.m. with the presentation beginning at 10 a.m. James T. Langley, Jr. will address the Unit on “Herbs Behind Bars.” Mr. Langley is a Horticulture Instructor for the Huntsville Center’s program at the O.B. Ellis Unit.

All interested persons are invited to attend and to stay for our potluck luncheon featuring Dishes from the Heart. You can learn more about the Pioneer Unit and about our upcoming meetings online at www.herbsocietypioneer.org or by following the Pioneer Unit on Facebook.
