Patrol Car Slides Off Roadway During Ice Storm, But Few Other Accidents
Chief Deputy Randy Noviskie of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reports no major weather-related calls during the recent ice storm.
He said a few vehicles slid off the roads (including one Sheriff’s deputy’s patrol unit). But he knew of no major accidents involving serious injury.
Noviskie said the Sheriff’s Office was prepared for the worst, though. Sheriff Keith Korenek implemented an emergency weather schedule Saturday evening, Jan. 24, as the cold weather arrived. All deputies were on duty over the weekend, working in 12-hour shifts, Noviskie said.
On Monday, one deputy patrolling SH 71 near the Colorado River Bridge slid off the icy road. The deputy was not injured, Noviskie said, but the patrol vehicle sustained some damage.
Noviskie praised the Texas Department of Transportation for their efforts to keep the roadways clear of ice. He also thanked the public for staying off the roads during the hazardous conditions.
“People did a wonderful job of staying off the roads,” Noviskie said. “We didn’t have too many calls.”
