Pasture Weed Seminar May 26

Weeds! Weeds! Weeds! With the recent beneficial rains, it is time to turn our minds to improving our pastures and eliminating the weeds.

The Friends of the Weimar Public Library and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office of Colorado County will present “Pasture Weed Identification: Strategies and Tips” at the Weimar Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 26.

Weeds that invade a pasture are the most common pest of that pasture and result in a reduction of the quality and quantity of beneficial grasses. To get started in improving pasture quality, the first step is purposeful weed identification.

The upcoming presentation will cover weed identification as well as common weeds found in local pastures and their control.

Weeds are strong competitors with desirable pasture grasses, and some weeds can be poisonous to livestock with some even resulting in animal sickness or death.

The first step in the development of a pasture weed management program is to identify the plants growing in your pasture and hayfield because management of the plant is specific to its type.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a fresh sample or a high-quality picture so that Agent Laramie Kettler can help to identify the specific weeds found in local pastures.

The program is free. Please RSVP to the Weimar Public Library at (979) 725-6608.
