Overnight Burglary at County Courthouse
County officials arriving to work on Wednesday morning, Nov. 2, discovered that the Fayette County Courthouse had been burglarized overnight.
The break-in happened sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Nothing of major value was taken, according to Lt. David Beyer of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Beyer told the Record on Wednesday morning that there were no signs of forced entry.
“We’re trying to determine how they got inside,” Beyer said.
County Judge Joe Weber said interior doors to some of the county offices inside the Courthouse had also been opened despite being locked at night. Weber said candy wrappers were left on some of the desks.
“This is all the more reason why we need better security in the courthouse,” Weber said.
Just last month, the Fayette County Commissioners approved $65,000 in purchases for courthouse security. The purchases include metal detectors, cameras and other security equipment. Those items have not yet been installed.
The burglary remains under investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
