Mangos are strewn about on I-10 and one 18-wheeler struck another carrying the produce Friday. One person was ejected and killed because of the collision.

A crash involving two 18-wheelers claimed a life on Interstate 10 Friday morning, Sept. 19.

The crash happened shortly before 5:46 a.m. in the westbound lanes about two miles west of Schulenburg. Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the crash, but a report was not available at press time.

Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to the wreck with four fire trucks and 11 personnel. Schulenburg Fire Chief Darren Guentert said one 18-wheeler ran into the rear of another 18-wheeler. One person was ejected and died at the scene, he said.

One of the trucks was carrying a load of mangos, which spilled across the highway.

Guentert said firefighters provided traffic control during cleanup of the wreckage, which took place throughout most of the morning. Both westbound lanes remained closed until around 8:40 a.m., when the left lane opened. Texas Department of Transportation took over traffic control around 9:15 a.m. The right lane opened after noon. Westbound traffic remained backed up through Schulenburg into the afternoon hours.

Also assisting with the wreck were the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County EMS and Schulenburg Police Department.
