One man was hospitalized and another escaped serious injury after a pickup crashed into Live Oak Creek near Muldoon Tuesday morning, May 30.

The crash happened at the bridge over Live Oak Creek on FM 2237 just west of Muldoon. A Chevy pickup pulling a box trailer loaded with construction tools was heading west on FM 2237. The pickup struck the guardrail on the right side of the bridge and then headed left toward the other guardrail. The pickup and trailer went over the guardrail and landed upside down on the bank of the creek.

Muldoon Fire Chief Stephen Kelly said the driver of the pickup was pinned inside the vehicle after the crash. He said other motorists stopped and extricated the man before firefighters arrived at the scene. Fayette County EMS transported the driver to St. David’s Hospital in South Austin.

A passenger in the pickup told investigators that another pickup pulling a trailer was heading east at the time of the crash. He said a metal object, which appeared to be the gate from a hog trap, flew off the other trailer as the two vehicles passed each other. He said the metal object flew toward their windshield. He said the driver swerved to avoid the object, which caused the Chevy to go into the guardrail and off the side of the bridge.

Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the crash, but a report was not available at press time. Fayette County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene as well.
