New Summer Programs Planned at Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites in La Grange
As the temperatures continue to climb to all-time highs, the staff of Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites plan ways to provide engaging outdoor family programs while beating the summer heat. A few of these programs even involve frozen sweet treats.
Starting in July, site staff will host periodic historical and nature-related activities for families and kids of all ages. Each program will highlight the rich history of 19th century life on the Bluff while exploring summer-time entertainment, ice and early refrigeration in Texas, and the Bluff’s natural landscape and surroundings. Summer programs include:
Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10: Parlor Games, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Learn to play traditional German games and children’s activities inside the Kreische house. While there, catch a tour around the rooms and see what life was like within the walls of the Kreische household in the late 19th century.
Thursday, July 21: Nature Hour, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
For nature lovers, the Nature Hour program will feature a variety of activities to showcase the unique ecology on the grounds. Learn more about the plants and wildlife of the Bluff, as well as ways you can help to conserve it. During the program, popsicles will be available as treats.
Saturday, July 23: Ice Cream Social, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Don’t miss this opportunity to make homemade ice cream from scratch. While shaking out one of the recipes, learn more about the science of making ice cream as well as the history of ice as a commodity in Texas. Up until the late 1860s, artificial re-frigeration was not a possibility, and methods of keeping items cool relied on clever techniques such as the spring water system Kreische created for his brewery.
Sunday, August 14: Back to School on the Bluff, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Participate in site-wide scavenger hunts and back-to-school programs before summer officially ends.
In addition to these fun activities, guided tours will be available on most Saturdays. Visit Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill’s website at www.visitkreischebrewery.com or check their social media for more details about the events as they come closer.
