Musk-Inspired ‘Utopia’ Coming to Bastrop Area?

Bastrop County isn’t just a place to shop. It might be a place for Tesla workers to live, too.

A front-page article in Friday’s Wall Street Journal is headlined “Musk Is Planning a Texas Utopia – His Own Town.” Already, Elon Musk’s enterprises SpaceX and the Boring Co. own facilities in Bastrop. That had led to speculation that Musk would bore a tunnel under the Colorado River to link downtown Austin with the airport via Metrorail.

But now the Journal says Musk may incorporate his own town in Bastrop County – apparently in order to fast-track development and provide lowcost housing for his employees. The Journal says he and his top executives have bought at least 3,500 acres in the area. SpaceX and Boring Co. warehouses are on FM 1209 between Bastrop and Webberville in Travis County.

Apparently one of Musk’s goals is affordable housing that could be rented to Tesla employees at below-market rates. Besides the “Gigafactory” Tesla has on the Texas 130 toll road, Musk has moved Tesla corporate headquarters to Austin from California.
