Brent Mascheck was hired Thursday as the new head football coach and athletic director at Flatonia ISD. A Shiner native, Mascheck has been a head coach for 18 total seasons, including stops at Columbus and Tidehaven before leading 4A West Columbia the last seven years.

Mascheck inherits a Flatonia team that went 11-2 last season in the 13th and final year of his predeccessor Chris Freytag, who has left coaching to go into sales.

Overall Mascheck as a 93--96 overall coaching record.

He resigned from West Columbia on Dec. 15, citing a wish to spend more time with family. His wife is from Yoakum and he had kids living in Hallettsville and Kyle.

Mascheck was also one of six semifinalists interviewed for the Schulenburg head coaching job before the Shorthorn selection committee went in a very different direction, choosing Luke Hobbs,33, Columbus offensive coordinator, who had never been a head coach before.

With Mascheck’s hiring, two of the three Fayette County head coaching vacancies are now filled.

La Grange, meanwhile, is still accepting applications for their head coaching vacancy. Superintendent Andy McHazlett said he hoped to have someone hired by the school board by mid-March.
