Longtime Flatonia Teachers Bruns and Moeller to Retire

Shawna Bruns and Delia ‘Dede’ Moeller have announced their retirement from Flatonia ISD at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Both have served mainly on the elementary campus.

Shawna has been with Flatonia for 30 years as a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade teacher, in the Content Mastery Lab, and the Varsity Cheer coach. Her first year of teaching was at Schulenburg Jr. High.

Dede has been with Flatonia for the last 19 years of her career. She also taught at Weimar ISD and St. Anthony’s Catholic School. Dede has served as a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teacher, 7th-12th grade Technology teacher, Technology Specialist, Math Interventionist, UIL Elementary Coordinator, and HS Extemporaneous Speaking Coach.

Shawna Mica Bruns graduated from Flatonia High School in 1987, Blinn College in 1989, and Texas A&M University- CS in 1992. Her parents are Douglas and Sandra Mica. Shawna is married to Shawn Bruns, a 1986 graduate of Schulenburg High.

Shawna remembers many of her own teachers when growing up- Darnell Varley, Audrey Lighteard, Justine Burmeister, Lucy Johnson, Jeanne Zouzalik Wetjen, Jeanette Mann, Betty Mueller, Glenda Mach, Ann Schmidt Rigden, Michael Winnet, Thadius Polasek, Virginia Ol-sovsky, Wayne Hunt, Robert Etlinger, David Ibarra, Rick Bivens, Ronnie Homann, Daryl Lau, George Koudelka, and Katy Gary.

Some of the elementary principals that Shawna and Dede have worked under at Flatonia include Anne Trevino, Candace Wubbena, Sal Vega, Greg Murrile, Debbie Gregory, Patrick Flaniken, Tandy Betak, Nicole Ramirez, and Laura Kutac.

Delia Kalinec Moeller graduated from Schulenburg High School in 1985, and the University of Houston- Victoria in 1993. Her parents are Wilbert and Anita Kalinec. Dede is married to Mike Moeller, a 1981 graduate of Flatonia High.

Dede’s memorable teachers when growing up were Mrs. Morrow and Mrs. Tawney from Katy Elementary. Also, Kent Ohnheiser, Nancy Strickland, Jerry Odstricil, John Dodson, and Edith Bujnoch from Schulenburg High. Shawna and Shawn’s children; Elizabeth, Alexandra, William and Katherine have all graduated or are attending Texas A&M University-CS. Matt and Elizabeth live in Buda, Alexandra lives in Dallas, William and Kaci live in College Station, and Katherine lives in College Station. Shawn and Shawna have three grandchildren; Mabel Ruth, Oliver Ray, and John Davis Price who live in Buda.

Dede and Mike’s children are Haley and Chandler. Haley graduated from Texas A&M University- Kingsville, and is attending Texas A&M School of Pharmacy. Chandler graduated this month from Texas A&M University- CS. Chandler, his wife, Hannah, and daughter, Adeline Grace, live in College Station.

Shawna and Dede feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to touch so many students’ lives, and plan to stay involved with youth in their upcoming retirement.
