Have you seen Senior Connections new look? The center has been given a facelift of sorts, and we love it. Thanks to Amanda Kridel, new Marketing and Development Director, for putting the final touches on the new logo, new updated website, our new name is official now, and we have a really cool color scheme.

The Senior Connections center is looking good these days. In fact, you can see the front door now before you enter the park from the front gate. We love the heightened visibility and new image for our organization.

Just like everything around here, we have a rich history and will never forget how we got started. What is happening now is the evolution of a small non-profit organization into the next level of its mission work. We have had some growing pains along the way, but we are on track now and we can see a great future ahead for our Center.

We will sure continue to have some more day trips, because memebers had a great one last week. Boy, did members have a good time on the day trip to College Station. There were 10 participants and a Schuber van driver, and we took off at 9:30 a.m. headed north to the George H. W. Bush Presidential Museum on the campus of Texas A&M University.

The day was so perfect, with the sun shining and a comfortable temperature in the mid-seventies. Of course, we took the scenic route and enjoyed the bursts of colors from the fields of wildflowers. They contrasted beautifully with the early morning light of the day.

Members thoroughly enjoyed the museum, which engaged all of our senses, with recordings and great visual displays of actual artifacts and photos of George and Barbara Bush’s life story. The walking aspect of it all was energizing after the hour and a half drive from Schulenburg, so we were all pretty lively. Some of the group members were photographed sitting at President Bush’s personal partner desk in a mock Oval Office setup they had there, and we all got a good laugh at that. Memories were made on this day, let me tell you.

Several of the group members even ventured outdoors and were rewarded with the gentle warmth of the sun on our arms and faces, as they paid their respects to the 41st President of the United States of America and his wife’s gravesite on the property. The museum docents told us the trek was a quarter of a mile, so to walk there and back was a good half mile, if not a little more, we all felt.

One member walked the whole way on her walker and another took up the offer of a wheelchair and she didn’t miss out on a thing. Wow, what a day we had. We spent about two hours at the Presidential Museum, we got to see a bonus exhibit on Nelson Mandala, and we learned a lot.

We have got our boarding and un-boarding on the Schuber down really good now. Our driver, Vicki Woodard, has become accustomed to our banter, groans, and knows that once we get comfortably situated, we will all calm down and hush. So, we boarded that bus and we disembarked from the bus in record but safe time at the Blue Baker Grill for a hearty lunch and some rest. You can just imagine how quiet our ride back home was. Yes, we were all wore out and the ride after all that walking and that good lunch, well, it just lulled us. Everyone talked about what they liked about the day and then we talked about what could we do better, and the consensus was that this was a well-organized day trip and everyone was pleased with the outcome. We arrived at the parking lot at Senior Connections right at 4 p.m., just like the itinerary said we would.

The next trip on our radar is the Fayette Community Theater play on Sunday afternoon, May 7 “Drinking Habits” is the name of the play and it sounds like a great comedy.
