An Austin man with La Grange connections was found dead in a vehicle crash after he went missing a month earlier.

Mark Twain Conner, 53 of Austin, was found dead on Saturday, July 23, in a work truck that had crashed into some woods on SH 95 near Coupland. Investigators believe the crash happened several weeks before it was discovered.

The truck belonged to Alfredie Scott III of La Grange. La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath said Conner had gone missing with the truck about a month ago. Gilbreath said Conner worked for Scott.

Conner had numerous family members in Fayette County.

Trooper Garrett Huntington of the Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the crash. Huntington’s report said the truck, a white 2006 Ford F-550, was driving south on SH 95. The crash happened about .15 miles south of the FM 1660 intersection. The report said Conner drove the truck off the right side of the roadway for some unknown reason. He said the truck overcorrected to the left, crossed the center stripe, and traveled off the road to the left and into a heavily wooded area. The truck struck a tree and came to rest.

The crash went unnoticed until last week. Gilbreath said a passerby discovered the wreck when they walked into the woods to determine why some foliage had died.
