Schulenburg I.S.D. Superintendent Duane Limbaugh announced at Monday’s school board meeting that he has been named the sole finalist for the superintendent job at White Deer I.S.D., which is located in the Texas Panhandle northeast of Amarillo.

Limbaugh told the school board Monday night that family considerations played a big part in his decision to leave Schulenburg. His daughter Taylor is a sophomore track runner for Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

“Our daughter moved to Texas Tech, seven-plus hours away, and my wife and I like to watch her run,” Limbaugh said. “So we were looking in that direction over the past year.

“Part of the reason we came here was to be closer to my wife’s dad,” he added. “He had moved in with us and he passed away in October. So it’s been hard, between that and our daughter being so far away. I love Schulenburg, but when this job opened up, I applied to be closer to our daughter, and I was fortunate to be named the lone finalist.”

The Schulenburg school board will meet this Friday to form an exit agreement with Limbaugh. Limbaugh is tentatively scheduled to remain at the helm in Schulenburg through Jan. 2. He said the district will likely appoint an interim superintendent while it conducts a job search for his replacement.

Limbaugh’s departure leaves one more big vacancy at Schulenburg I.S.D. Earlier this year, athletic director and head football coach Walter Brock resigned during the football season.
