LG’s Largest Day Care Closing

The Remnant Academy (TRA) day care in La Grange announced that it will close at the end of May. TRA manager Leticia Fonville informed parents of the decision last Friday, March 8.

The Remnant Church owns the day care facility and asked TRA to sign a new lease agreement in August of last year. During a meeting with parents last month, TRA said it could not afford the proposed rent without raising its rates to a level beyond the means of many parents. TRA is one of only two day cares in La Grange that accepts government aid for child care.

In an interview with the Record last Friday, Fonville said TRA considered moving to another facility. She said they looked at other properties in La Grange, but none of them were set up to accommodate a day care without substantial renovations.

“There are a lot of regulations for child care facilities, and nothing we looked at was move-in ready,” she said.

The closure will leave many working parents without child care in a town with few options. TRA currently cares for 93 kids and has 16 staff members.

“I have a five month old child and there is no child care available,” Fonville said. “I don’t know if we’re going to stay here in La Grange. We’re a family of six and I just lost my job.”
