LGISD Hits Maximum Incoming Transfers
Superintendent Andy McHazlett reported that the current enrollment sits at 1,922 which is 21 above the same time last year. The current attendance for the district stands at 94.48% with ADA (average daily attendance) numbers at 1,787. This number is what determines the amount of funding the district gets from the state. He also told the board that the district is at capacity for transfer students, which means that some students who did not live in the district and applied had to be turned down for this year.
Elementary librarian Amy McCord and library aide Pam Keilers presented a report of many of the activities that the library is being used for since April is National School Library month.
Assistant Superintendent Stacy Eilers reported that online registration for the 202425 school year will be open soon.
Director of operations Sharon Muzny told the board that the district would be hosting the Fayette County Sheriffs school safety meeting for the county.
Maintenance Tax Note
At the January meeting, the board discussed the possibility of partnering with PFM Financial Advisors for the purposes of the funding several technology and facilities needs which may require a maintenance tax note. A maintenance tax note is used by a school district to pay for maintenance expenses. Superintendent McHazlett told the board (at that meeting) that the district normally budgets about $280,000 for maintenance projects each year. However, that means that some projects have to be postponed until later years as there are more projects than funds available. A maintenance tax note would allow the district to have the funds available for all the needed maintenance projects and have a standardized annual debt service payment. If the district has a $1 million note, the payback would be $93,389 per year for 15 years, a $2 million note – $186,808 per year, and a $3 million note – $280,398 per year.
At the April meeting a representative from PFM was present to address the board on how PFM would work with the district utilizing their expertise in the areas of bond pricing, quantitative strategies, and strategic planning services, as well as management and budget consulting services, and long-term financial planning through its affiliates. The board moved to approve engaging with PFM Financial Advisors to assist the district with maintenance tax notes. The board also approved a preliminary plan of finance with PFM for LGISD maintenance tax notes and begin discussions with prospective banks as recommended by the administration.
