LGISD Board Talks CAD Appointment and Library Books

The La Grange I.S.D. Board of Trustees picked a new representative to serve on the board of the Fayette County Appraisal District at their meeting Monday, Dec. 11..

La Grange I.S.D., as the largest taxing entity in the County, has three representatives on the Appraisal District board: Dudley Piland, Evelyn Grant and Glen Altwein. Piland’s term was up for renewal.

Superintendent Andy McHazlett said Piland was interested in continuing to serve. But at the school board meeting last month, Trustee Anthony Wessels proposed that the district solicit other citizens who may be interested in serving.

At Monday’s meeting, McHazlett said he received a letter of interest from local businessman Greg Deters.

“(Deters) gives a lot back to the community,” Wessels said on Monday. “I think he would be an excellent choice to fill that role.”

“I agree with Anthony,” said School Board President Gary Drab. “I think he’d do a wonderful job for us. I think change is good – you get different eyes to look at things.”

The board voted to appoint Deters to the Appraisal District board for a two-year term.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the school board reviewed a list of books that the school libraries intend to purchase. McHazlett said the review process is part of the school’s new policy regarding library content.

“The librarians will submit a list of books to order to the superintendent,” McHazlett said. “The superintendent will make that list available to the board members, and it has been posted publicly on our website.”

The school implemented the new library book policy over concerns both locally and statewide about inappropriate content in school libraries. The list of titles is available online at https://www.lgisd. net/o/district/page/librarymaterials- information.

District Finance Director Diana Fitzpatrick reported that La Grange I.S.D. earned a superior achievement award in the latest ratings from the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST). FIRST measures 20 financial indicators to judge the financial health of the school district. La Grange I.S.D. earned a perfect score. The board also voted to call an election on May 4. Place 6, currently held by Calvin Mersiovsky, and Place 7, currently held by Dr. Karen Roberts, are up for election next year. The Fayette County Elections Office will conduct the elections.

In addition, McHazlett provided the school board with a staffing update. The district hired Kelsie Hrbacek as a special education teacher in the middle school. She previously served the district as a middle school educational aid. The district also hired Jacob Stephenson as an assistant band director. Assistant high school band director Loren Parker resigned. The district also hired the following paraprofessionals: Roger Anderson as high school educational aid in the behavioral unit and Nicole Sinclair as an administration office receptionist.
