LCRA Responds to Questions about New Power Plant Project
The proposed new electric generating plant to be built in Fayette County between La Grange and Fayetteville would not pollute the atmosphere or destroy the land, according to Lower Colorado River Authority General Manager Charles Herring. He explained that federal and state environmental protection agencies would not allow the construction of such a plant, nor would the LCRA and the City of Austin want to do so. He went on to say that contact had been made with Houston Natural Gas Company, which had announced it was looking at building a coal slurry pipeline from the Rocky Mountains to the Texas Gulf Coast that could potentially supply the plant. Herring also told The Record the Camp Swift plant site wasn’t feasible because the federal government owned the land and it wasn’t large enough to accommodate construction of the cooling lake associated with the project.
A tragic tractor accident on a ranch near Mullins Prairie claimed the life of Dalton Ernest Weems, 68. Justice of the Peace A.V. Smith held an inquest at the scene.
The valedictorian of the 1974 senior class at Bishop Forest High School was Bernadette Janda, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alois H. Janda of Hostyn. She had a grade average of 95.6. The salutatorian was Marilyn Berger, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Berger of Schulenburg, with an average of 94.1.
Myra Albers was valedictorian and La Donna Rogers salutatorian of the 1974 senior class of Round Top-Carmine High School. Myra, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Albers of Ledbetter, had a grade average of 93.61. La Donna, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Rogers of Giddings, had a grade average of 91.4.
The Hostyn Parish was celebrating the golden jubilee of its pastor, the Rev. Msgr. Alois J. Morkovsky, on Sunday at 3 p.m. with a concelebrated Mass at Holy Rosary Church.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Gerhard Janssen, 81, a lifelong Fayette County resident; Louie Riehs, 77, of La Grange; Mrs. Augusta A. Steffan, 69, of La Grange; Charles A. Eilers, 47, of Schulenburg; and J.S. Burkett, 75, of La Grange.
Fayette County was sending six participants to the Texas 4-H Roundup on the campus of Texas A&M University June 3-5. They were: Jeannette Reinhardt and Diane Schulz of the Winchester 4-H Club, cooperative demonstration; Sharon Dopslauf of the La Grange 4-H Club, food show; Catherine Hajovsky of the Holman 4-H Club, home environment; and Debbie Bippert of the La Grange 4-H Club and Carol Lehmann of the Warda 4-H Club, natural resources.
Anyone in the Cistern area interested in borrowing books from the Mid-Texas Bookmobile was asked to contact Mrs. Gertrude Pavlica in Flatonia. At least four persons had to indicate they would check out books for the bookmobile to stop in Flatonia.
Despite mechanical difficulties that altered and shortened its scheduled operating hours, the American Lung Association’s mobile x-ray unit handled 186 people in La Grange in one afternoon. Freewill donations to the program amounted to $362.71.
Nearly 500 descendants of the John, Anton, Josef and Frank Cernosek and Karel Peter families attended a reunion at the KJT Hall in Ammannsville on Sunday. The children of Frank and Johana Cernosek were hosts for the reunion, with Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Cernosek and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kallus serving as co-chairs. A lively program concluded with the reading of the 23rd Psalm in unison and singing Czech and English songs. The first Cernosek families arrived in America 101 years before, 1873, settling in the Hostyn area.
Federal legislation raised the minimum wage for farm workers from $1.30 to $1.60 per hour. The minimum wage was scheduled to increase in the following increments: $1.80 on Jan. 1, 1975; $2 on Jan. 1, 1976; $2.20 on Jan. 2, 1977; and $2.30 on Jan. 1, 1978.
