La Grange I.S.D. Considering Community Access to New Track
The new track at Leopard Stadium is nearing completion. School leaders at La Grange I.S.D. have proposed a plan for community access to the track.
La Grange I.S.D. Director of Operations Sharon Muzny told the school board at a meeting last Monday that contractors recently completed the surface of the main track. They were working this week to complete the surface of the pole vault areas.
“We’re planning a construction walk-through on July 13 and hopefully have that project closed out,” she said.
Muzny said she recently met with Superintendent Andy McHazlett and Athletic Director Matt Kates about community access to the new track. She said they are proposing community hours of 5 to 7 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
“My only concern is that it’s typically the area that gets the most graffiti,” Muzny said. “Anytime there’s vandalism, it always seems to happen at the stadium.”
She said the school would add some security cameras around the stadium in an attempt to curb vandalism.
“Mr. McHazlett, Coach Kates and I agree that we don’t want the public to intermingle with students,” she said. “So if there was a school event that took place during the community hours, it would be closed to the public.”
The school board did not take any official action on the community access plan at the meeting last Monday.
