KJZT Family Life Society Holds Quarterly Meeting, June 14 Flag Day Proclaimed

On May 15 the second quarterly meeting of Society No. 31 of La Grange, St. Frances of Rome, KJZT Family Life was held at 4 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church Narthex meeting room. President Elizabeth Kallus called the meeting to order and led opening prayers, especially remembering members who passed away since the last quarterly meeting, Loretta Brugger and Josephine Huelsebusch. Pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags were recited.

Principal of Sacred Heart School in La Grange, La Donna Voelkel, was introduced and a People Helping People 50% matching check from KJZT State Office, $675.00, was presented to the school from the Sacred Heart Spring Festival Plant Wheel booth that Society No. 31 sponsored.

Mayor of La Grange Jan Dockery was introduced; and she signed the KJZT Family Life promoted Flag Day Proclamation that proclaims patriotism by celebrating and honoring June 14 as National Flag Day. Then she was guest speaker and updated members about happenings in the city of La Grange.

Reading of the Feb. 20 meeting minutes was dispensed, Treasurer Barbara Eilert filed her report, bills were approved for payment, and several thank you cards were read.

Secretary Marilyn Kothmann read correspondence from the KJZT State Office. KJZT Family Fun Day is at Splashway in Sheridan on June 11; fifty-five scholarships totaling $35,840 were awarded to members graduating from high school and those continuing their education; there is a Society Sales Contest; and Joan Johnson and Deborah Kaspar have been added to the newly created Fraternal Field Managers position.

KJZT Clerical Endowment Fund enrollments report by Vice President Joy Kovar showed one special birthday, one get well card, three sympathies by Society No. 31, and sixteen enrollments by individuals. The two deceased members will be remembered with a Mass for each of their intention. Kallus gave the publicity and KJZT Traveling Unity Rosary reports.

Unfinished business: Kothmann gave a full report on the Sacred Heart Spring Festival plant wheel booth. Members attended the annual feast day Mass on March 11th at Sacred Heart Church. For the Marshall program, Mayor Jan Dockery was present at the meeting. Junior division raffle tickets had been mailed in by deadline.

Motion carried to participate in the KJZT “Feeding Families Across Texas” program by donating $200.00 that will be fully matched by the State Office and then will benefit AMEN food pantry in La Grange.

New business: Members from Society No. 31 attended the annual family District V Meeting and Social on Sunday, April 30, at Robert’s Steakhouse in Flatonia hosted by the Hostyn Society, namely District V State Director and Society No. 31 Vice President Joy Kovar, Roy Kovar, Treasurer Barbara Eilert, Rose Recek, Patricia Henneke and husband Al, and Lisa Schlemmer and husband Doug. A nice program including a Memorial Service and presentation of year pins was held. Named as Society No. 31 50-year pin recipients were Stacy Baca, Tracy Hughett, Mary Kallus, Katina Karstedt, Lisa Schlemmer, and Amy Wessels. Named as 75-year pin recipients were Pauline Epps, Helen Hall, Patricia Henneke, Mary Louise Hernandez, Marie Morrey, Mary Janecek Paul, and Bernice Vaclavik. Societies who participated in the Fraternal Program during 2022 were awarded certificates and Society No. 31 received Platinum Status. In 2024, Society No. 31 La Grange will be the host society.

A motion carried to donate $150 towards T-shirts for the June 12-15 Vacation Bible School at Sacred Heart Church in La Grange. Also, society No. 31 will have a fundraiser this summer.

District V State Director Joy Kovar said annuity rates are up and to contact her for all the details and any other insurance information. She also mentioned that she had attended the Fraternal Alliance meeting in San Antonio.

Attendance prize was won by Rose Recek and the meeting closed with the Memorare prayer. The next meeting will be held Aug. 21.
