On Wednesday, Sept. 14 at approximately 1:27 p.m. Interdiction Investigator David Smith conducted a traffic stop on IH10 west bound near the 664 mile marker, on a Hyundai SUV for a traffic infraction. During contact with the driver, no identification was provided and several criminal indicators were given.

Investigator Smith asked for assistance by the K9 unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 Kolt. Deputy Herman Olvera also assisted on the scene. During the investigation, K9 Kolt alerted on the vehicle and a probable cause search was conducted. During the search, bundled bulk US currency was located under the driver seat, which totaled $24,725. Located behind the radio cluster in the dash, was drug paraphernalia and a cell phone. Also located in the car was a ledger with names and dollar amounts that is consistent with human smuggling and money laundering incidents.

The driver was later transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center, where he was positively identified as 36-year-old Daniel Mendoza-Munguia, of San Antonio.
