Internet Outage Cause Explained

Some customers of Colorado Valley Communication (CVC) went without internet service for nearly three days last weekend. CVC spokesman John Wied said the first outages were reported on Friday, Oct. 21. CVC restored service on Sunday, Oct. 23. Wied said the outage affected CVC customers with DSL service. He said the outage was due to a faulty electrical card that was inside one of the nearly two dozen network cabinets spread throughout CVC’s service area. The outage was not connected to the Antiques Show in Round Top and Warrenton, Wied said.

“It was a basic piece of electrical equipment in a cabinet that malfunctioned, sending erratic signals that took time to fix by trial and error,” Wied said.

Wied said there was no feedback system that could pinpoint the cause of the outage. As a result, he said, it took technicians an inordinate amount of time to track down the problem.

“We will revise our check systems to look at basic things first before complex issues so this very rare but impermissible glitch won’t happen in the future,” Wied said.
