Inaugural Fayetteville Second Sunday Polka Dance Held March 8

Over 100 guests attended the first 2nd Sunday Polka Dance held in the new Fayetteville Community Center.

It may have been damp outside, but it was sunny, bright and high-spirited inside the new Fayetteville Community Center for the inaugural 2nd Sunday Polka Dance held on March 8. More than 100 seasoned dancers and polka lovers, as well as those new to the tradition, gathered for the dance featuring the outstanding music of Polka Friends, comprised of seasoned (and upcoming) performers: Duane and Donnie Wavra, Robert Herridge, Allison Crowson, Rick Weiss and Miss Ella B.

For three hours, everyone enjoyed an afternoon filled with lively music, dancing and reconnection with friends and relatives. Many remarked on the special experience of dancing once again on the beloved original wood floors from the original E.J. Knesek building an important piece of Fayetteville’s musical and cultural history. The band kept dancers moving throughout the afternoon as guests celebrated the rich Czech, German and Central Texas polka heritage that has long been a part of the Fayetteville community. Sunday afternoon dances used to be a integral part of the lives of residents in Central Texas but have become scarce in recent years.

The 2nd Sunday Polka Dance series is sponsored by the Greater Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Fayetteville Community Center Group, and with the support of generous donors who support keeping traditional music and dance alive in the community. The series will continue next month on Sunday, April 12 from 2-5 p.m. at the new Fayetteville Community Center located at 101 W. Fayette Street. The entertaining and renowned Shiner Hobo Band will perform. Admission is free and everyone is invited to come out, enjoy great music and dance the afternoon away.
