House Fully Engulfed by Fire Tuesday Night

A two-story farmhouse on Holub Rd. north of Schulenburg burned Tuesday night, April 2. The home belonged to Jimmy and Cindy Carter.

Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department got the call around 8:39 p.m. Assistant Fire Chief Drew Brossmann said the home was fully engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived.

Brossmann said the homeowners reported they were watching television in their living room when they heard a loud noise coming from outside.

At first, Brossmann said, they thought the noise was coming from the strong north wind blowing that evening. The noise continued, so they looked outside and saw flames coming from the garage and spreading to the house.

The couple moved their three vehicles away from the home. One of them, an SUV, suffered significant fire damage, Brossmann said.

Schulenburg VFD responded with seven fire trucks and 31 firefighters. They called for assistance from Weimar Volunteer Fire Department, which sent another two fire trucks and six personnel.

Brossmann said he was unsure how the fire started, other than that it appeared to have originated in the garage. He said the strong wind that evening caused the fire to rapidly spread throughout the home, gutting it entirely.

The last firefighters left the scene around 1:35 a.m.
