A family in West Point lost their rent home to a fire Friday, May 31. The home was located on Justice Rd. near Mt. Olive Cemetery.

La Grange Volunteer Fire Department got the call around 11:45 a.m. They responded with an engine, tanker and two quick response trucks. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flames. La Grange VFD called for assistance from Muldoon Volunteer Fire Department, who sent a tanker and additional personnel.

The raging fire was starting to spread into a heavily wooded area near the home. But firefighters managed to keep it under control. They had the bulk of the fire put out about 20 minutes after arrival.

They spent another two hours pulling apart the metal roof and walls that had fallen onto the smoldering remains.

Neighbors said the home had been abandoned for several years. The residents told the Record they had moved into the home about two weeks ago and were fixing it up.

They believed the fire may have started from an electrical malfunction.

Fayette County EMS treated two of the residents for smoke inhalation at the scene. They declined hospital transport. Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy Seth Nagel responded as well. He and Fayette County EMS Director Josh Vandever connected the family with the American Red Cross for assistance.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 2:15 p.m.
