A home in Cistern burned to the ground Monday evening, May 15. According to Muldoon Fire Chief Stephen Kelly, the new owners moved into the home just two weeks before.

Muldoon Volunteer Fire Department received the call around 6:50 p.m. reporting a home on fire near the corner of SH 95 and Jeddo Rd. There was no one at home at the time.

Kelly said the flames had fully engulfed the two-story home by the time the first firefighters arrived. Kelly called for assistance from Flatonia Fire and Rescue, who responded along with Fayette County EMS and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Firefighters from the two departments battled the blaze for nearly four hours. EMS treated three Muldoon firefighters for heat exhaustion.` Kelly said the homeowner had purchased a new pickup just two days before. It was parked near the home and the keys were inside. In addition, the fire caused a power line to fall across the driveway.

“We were unable to move the truck because of the power line and the keys were in the house,” Kelly said. “It got some heat damage on the side.”

Despite their efforts, Kelly said the house could not be saved. Firefighters cleared the scene around 12:44 a.m.

“The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time,” Kelly said.

The home was insured, but the owners lost nearly all of their belongings in the fire. A relative has set up a Go-FundMe account to assist the homeowners with their recovery.

“On May 15, 2023, Brian, Ashley, Colt, and Brinley Moore tragically lost their home in Cistern in a terrible fire that destroyed their house all too quickly,” said the description on the GoFundMe page. “Thankfully, the family and their dog are safe. Nothing from the home was able to be recovered, leaving them only with the clothes they had on that day … Give if you are able, and please share if you are not. Every bit goes a long way. Together we can help them recover and rebuild from this unexpected tragedy.”
