Habitat Director Discusses Home Repair Loan Program with Retired Teachers
The Fayette County Retired Teachers Association met Monday, March 9 at the New Life Methodist Church in La Grange. Guest speaker was Kenny Couch, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in Fayette County.
Couch spoke with members about low-cost repair loans for both current school employees and TRS annuitants. Couch stressed that the goal was to keep educators within our community, and emphasized that many residents within our community need assistance with major repairs, including roofs and structural issues.
The program for school employees and annuitants is slated to launch in July, 2026, and Habitat plans to assist one applicant in each of the Flatonia, La Grange, and Schulenburg areas.
Couch reminded attendees that support for Fayette County Habitat for Humanity can be made through donations, purchasing raffle tickets, or by shopping in the Habitat Resale Shop in Schulenburg The business portion of the meeting included the treasurer’s report, examination and unit approval of proposed amendments to the Texas Retired Teachers Association. These amendments are slated for approval at the House of Delegates meeting in San Marcos on March 25.
The book raffle prize was donated by Marian Tajchman and won by Rhea Wagner, and the member retention door prize was won by Rick West. Refreshments were provided by Lisa Slinkard, Carolyn Mc-Crory, and Theresa Wagner.
A field trip to Festival Hill is planned for April 13, with lunch at Busted Oaks Cellars to follow.
