Governor to Speak At Giddings Event

  • Gov. Greg Abbott
    Gov. Greg Abbott

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is bringing his campaign for expanding support for private schools through a school voucher program to this area.

Next Tuesday, March 28, Abbott is appearing at something being billed as Parent Empowerment Night at Giddings’ Immanuel Lutheran School.

This is a free, but ticketed event (through www.texaspolicy. com/events). The doors open at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 6 p.m.

Abbott has been opening campaigning throughout Texas for the passing of Senate Bill 8, which if passed would give families up to $8,000 in taxpayer money, per student, to pay for private schooling through an education savings account, called an ESA.

Most of Abbott’s stops this year stumping for the school voucher program have been held at private Christian schools in mid-size cities. This is the first in a small town.

Rural residents have been more reluctant that big city voters to support the idea of voucher programs because of the fear of the impact on small town public school, with similar small-sized school budgets that could be hit hard by the plan. Currently public schools get state funding, but private schools do not.
