Holy Smokers BBQ

The Round Top Family Library has several free programs during the month of August. Yoga in the library is on Mondays at 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. on Wednesdays. The St. James Episcopal Men’s Club (the Holy Smokers) will hold a barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out, at 156 N. Monroe St. across from H-E-B. A half chicken is $6 and a sausage link $7, drive through only. This barbecue is for the benefit of the Holy Smokers.

Bingo For Seniors

VFW Post 5254 and Auxiliary On Tuesday, Aug. 15, meetings of the La Grange Fayette Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5254 and Auxiliary will be held at the VFW Home in La Grange. Meeting time for the VFW Auxiliary is 5 p.m. A joint light meal will be served at 6 p.m., followed by the VFW Post meeting. New potential members are invited to attend.

The Civil War & Vietnam in Texas

James C. Kearney, an assistant professor in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas, combines his Vietnam memoir with his translation of W. A. Trenckmann’s civil war novel, “The Forty-Eighters on Possum Creek,” to argue that the dilemma faced by German immigrants during the Civil War has striking parallels to the situation many Americans faced during the Vietnam War. The program and book signing will be Thursday, Aug. 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fayette Public Library meeting room.

Food Bank Truck

The Central Texas Food Bank truck will be at the Waldeck Lutheran Church located at the Junction of FM-1291 and FM2145 on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Food distribution will be walk-up method. Volunteers will distribute the food from tables as the clients walk-thru the line making their selections. Every client needs to bring their own sturdy reusable bags, boxes, or plastic tubs. Wagons will be furnished by CTFB.

Schulenburg Young Farmers

The Schulenburg Young Farmers will hold their 56th Annual Hay Show on Wednesday, Aug. 30, and Thursday, Aug. 31, in conjunction with the Fayette County Fair. Judging will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the Emily Fritsch Pavilion at the fairgrounds. The hay sale will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Emily Fritsch Pavilion at the fairgrounds. An entry fee of $10 will pay for the cost of the testing. Hay entries can be dropped off at the following locations: MG Farm Service Center in Weimar, Farmers Co-op in Schulenburg, La Grange Farm and Ranch in La Grange, and Mica Soil Service in Flatonia. Fayette County Fair Parade The Fayette County Fair Parade will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, downtown La Grange. To enter, call or text Gloria Heinrich at (979) 966-8500 or email fayettecountyfairparade@gmail.com, by Aug. 30. Registration is also available on the website at www. fayettecountyfair.org. The parade route will begin at Jackson and Colorado and go West on Colorado St. across Hwy. 77 N at the red light and continue down Colorado Street where it will disband at the city swimming pool. The high school band and the presentation of plaques for the Volunteer of the Year and Parade Marshall will be at City Hall at 9:30 a.m. National Anthem is at 10 a.m. and the parade starts immediately following. You can register the morning of the parade at City Hall, 155 E. Colorado, beginning at 7 a.m. but to be judged you must be registered and in line by 9 a.m.

Fayetteville’s Annual Church Feast The Fayetteville St. John The Baptist Catholic Church will hold their annual picnic on Sunday, Sept. 3, at St. John’s Recreation Hall in Fayetteville. A Mass with Polka Music will be held at 10 a.m. with local musicians taking part in the Mass. There will be a barbecue pork and sausage dinner served at 10:30 a.m. Plates to go at the hall and a drive thru line will also be available at 10:30 a.m. Area musicians will provide live music starting at 11 a.m under the pavilion. Barbecue and sausage burgers will be sold beginning at 1:30 p.m. A country auction including quilts, antiques, coins, etc. will be held at 1:30 p.m. There will be bingo at 2 p.m. in an air conditioned hall and kolaches and other pastries will be available throughout the day. Some attractions include country store, plant wheel, children’s games, silent auction, cake wheel, and ice cold refreshments.
