Memorial Day

Come meet your old friends and make new ones at the annual Serbin Picnic at the Serbin Picnic Grounds on FM 2239 on Sunday, May 28. The English Worship Service begins at 8:30 a.m. conducted by Pastor John Schmidt. Barbecue beef, pork, and chicken will be sold by the pound beginning at 9 a.m. The Ladies Aid will be selling potato salad, beans, noodles and pastries. The Ladies Aid will also be holding a bake sale. The Youth Leage hamburger stand will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Activities include the Shiner Clippers at Serbin baseball game at 2 p.m., School Children’s Program at 2 p.m., booths and games at 2 p.m., barrel train rides at 2:30 p.m., and washer pitching tournament at 5:30 p.m. Entertainment will be from 3 to 8 p.m. by the Czech Melody Masters. The Texas Wendish Heritage Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The public is invited to the annual Memorial Day observance Monday, May 29 at 10 a.m. at Wolters Park in Schulenburg. Assembly of Veterans at 9:45 a.m. Patriotic songs by D’Vine Testament. Guest speaker is Fayette County Judge Dan Mueller.

There’s more Hospice Brazos Valley is having a monthly support group for caregivers of people who have terminal or chronic illnesses. This will be held at the HBV office, 1048 North Jackson. For information, call Cindy Fanning at (979) 431-1556.

AMEN Pantry Holiday Hours

The AMEN Food Pantry will be closed Memorial Day, Monday, May 29 and will be open Tuesday, May 30 for food distribution 9 a.m. until noon.

Memorial Day Garbage Schedule

City of La Grange offices will be closed Monday, May 29 for Memorial Day. Waste Management garbage and recycle service will be on their regular schedule.

Texas German Society Meeting

The Fayette County Chapter of the Texas German Society will have their monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 31 at 11 a.m. at the Casino Hall in La Grange. Caleb Parks will give a tour of the facility and highlight the historical significance of the building. Refreshments and lunch will be served and everyone is invited to attend this interesting presentation.

Summer Reading Fun

Mark your calendars! Get ready for seven weeks of summer reading fun with programs every Wednesday and Thursday in June and July. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the Fayette Public Library. It starts on Thursday, June 1. All Wednesday and Thursday Programs will begin at 10:15 a.m. and are free and open to the public. Beekeepers Association Meeting

The Fayette County Beekeepers Association (FaycoBeeks) will have their next meeting on Saturday, June 3 at the Fayette County Agriculture Building in La Grange, located at 255 Svoboda Ln. For new beekeepers, there will be a Beekeeping 101 presentation starting at 4:30 p.m. and it will be a great opportunity to meet up with experienced beekeepers who can serve as mentors and advisors. A potluck dinner will follow, and guests are welcome to bring their favorite sides/desserts. Afterwards, there will be a business meeting, an open discussion on bee-things, and possible guest presentation. Membership dues for 2023 are $25/year, individual or family. Membership is not required to attend the meeting, FaycoBeeks welcomes all new members and especially encourages young beekeepers and their families to join. Volunteer Service Day at Festival Hill The Round Top Festival Institute Gardens and Grounds Volunteer Service Day will be held on Saturday, June 3 starting at 9:30 a.m. with check-in at the yellow school building and light breakfast snacks will be provided by Lollitop Sweetshop. After an overview of project areas for the day, crews gear up and get started. Projects of trimming, raking leaves and planting typically last until noon, when crews wrap up and head out to lunch provided by The Stone Cellar. Interested in contributing to the Festival Hill Gardens and Grounds Service Day? The group is in need of bottled water, breakfast goodies, light snacks, fruit and bug spray to name a few items. Summertime Bicycle Ride

Eichler-Kieke Family Reunion

The longtime tradition of the Eichler and Kieke family reunions will continue in 2023 on Sunday, June 4 beginning at 11 a.m. at the La Bahia Hall. There will be a catered chicken-fried steak meal. Drinks will be provided. Text or call the number attending a week in advance to (979) 451-1507. The meal will be approximately $12. Desserts and additional sides may be brought with your silent auction items. Help spread the word to all relatives and friends. Music is planned by Gene, Conway, Mia, Diane, Judy and hopefully many more will join in.

KC Fried Pork Chop Drive-Thru

The annual La Grange Knights of Columbus drive-thru scholarship fundraiser will be held Wednesday, June 7 from 4-6 p.m. at the KC Community Center at 190 S. Brown St. in La Grange. The meal will consist of fried pork chops, black-eyed peas, buttered potatoes and cabbage for $12 per plate. Tickets are available by calling (979) 968-5117. Limited tickets will be available on the day of the meal.

Kolache Klobase Festival

The 32nd year of the Czech Kolache Klobase Festival is Saturday, June 10 at Riverside Hall in East Bernard. It begins at 10:30 a.m. with music throughout the day and a Kolache eating contest begins at 2 p.m. A sausage and barbecue chicken, sauerkraut and other trimmings plate lunch will be available for purchase, serving begins at 11 a.m. Drive thru plates will be available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Arts and craft booths inside and outside with hand crafted items, jewelry and clothing.
