The Rottary Club of Flatonia welcomed two guest speakers at its weekly meeting hosted by Rotarian Judy Pate. Speaker Carolyn Caflisch of the Smith McMillan Chapter, Daughters of the Amerrican Revolution, spoke about America250, the nationwide celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States on Independence Day, July 4, 2026. She highlighted the discovery of John Sorrell, a soldier of the American Revolutionary War, who is buried in Fayette County.

A 30-by-30-inch Bronze Patriot Plaque honoring Sorrell will be unveiled July 4, 2026 at the Veterans Memorial on the Fayette County Courthouse Square.

Also speaking was Larry Jackson of the Fayette County Semiquincentennial Commission and a member of the Rotary Club of La Grange. Jackson shared plans for a year of events across the county leading up to and after the anniversary, including flag displays, parades, quilt and photography exhibits, picnics, fireworks, and a July 4 courthouse square celebration featuring a brass band, military flyover, patriotic ceremony and awards, food trucks, and fireworks.

“This is not just a celebration, but a historical remembrance, and I invite all in Fayette County to participate and enjoy,” said Jackson.
